Learning Partnerships Benefitting Local Children

Since its foundation in 1992, SCEC (formerly Southwark Community Education Council) has provided enrichment classes on Saturday mornings for children attending state funded primary schools in the London Borough of Southwark. The classes are held in the independent schools of the Dulwich Foundation, Alleyn’s School, Dulwich College and James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS) who provide accommodation rent-free as well as free administrative support, resources and staff to coordinate each of the schemes.

From the outset, SCEC has aimed to make the children’s learning experiences stimulating and fun: Saturday School Is Cool’ was an early strap-line. By concentrating on Literacy (Year 3),  Mathematics (Year 5) and laboratory science (Year 6), the Saturday classes focus on the three core subjects of Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum, working to support state schools with either increased engagement or enrichment in these subjects.  The end result is not only added excitement for these subjects, but a boost in knowledge, skills and learning outcomes within the regular Monday – Friday school week.
